The Trouble With Chickens

“In which a detective dog solves a mystery, and a dachshund is a jerk.”

In The Trouble With Chickens, my first book with the fabulous Doreen Cronin, we meet J.J. (a former search-and-rescue dog) and follow him on his quest to solve a mystery most distressing. Displayed here is some of my favorite final art, and a look at some of the early concept work. I was quite fortunate that the villain of the book is a dachshund, seeing as I had the perfect model. If you'd like your very own copy of The Trouble With Chickens, it can easily be purchased on bookshop.org or from your local giant online book purveyor!

The Legend of Diamond Lil

In The Legend of Diamond Lil, my second book with Doreen Cronin, we join J.J. the dog detective on another mystery. And like most noir mysteries, this one has a fetching dame. Almost literally. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy! Especially if you've already read The Trouble With Chickens. Or any of the Chicken Squad books! Or that tv show!

Chicken Squad: The First Misadventure

The Chicken Squad books are Doreen’s follow-up to the Trouble With Chickens series. But instead of solving a mystery through the eyes of a detective dog, we follow the chicks on one of their cases. (Take note: If you have an actual mystery you need solved, you should probably hire an actual human. Unless you have no money, in which case I'd hire the dog. When doing almost any contract work, the order is human, dog, then chicken.) Anyways, in this, their first misadventure (I said the book title!), the Chicken Squad must solve a mystery most curious… most grumpy… most fuzzy-tailed. What’s the secret? Find out for yourself, you lazy reader! Why are you SO lazy!!?

The Case of the Weird Blue Chicken

The Case of the Weird Blue Chicken is next book in the series. This time the Chicken Squad is visited by a chicken most peculiar… most peculiar indeed… [ kevin strokes bearded chin and looks thoughtfully off in the distance, remembering his own run-ins with peculiar birds ]. If you hanker for a good chicken mystery that isn't salmonella poisoning, I highly suggest you pick up a copy of The Case of the Weird Blue Chicken at your local bookstore or online vendor!

More covers!

With deep regret I was unable to work on the next two Chicken Squad interiors (which were handled masterfully by Stephen Gilpin), but I continued on with the covers for the next two installments. Please take a glance, and if you’ve enjoyed this tour through this chicken-filled world, and I highly encourage you to check out the series for yourself! Or I guess you could… get some real-life chickens. A few squirrels. A dog. You know… set up your own little drama in the backyard.
