Yesterday, I traveled out to my old alma mater to drop in on a life drawing studio and do some drawing. I have say, I was very surprised at how little change there was in the environment. I walked in, and it was just as I remembered it.
One thing that was different, however, was the model. Now, it was the same model I had drawn years ago, in school. But she looked so much older to me. Her hair was greyer, and much longer. Her face was a bit more creased at the corners of the mouth, and the skin sagged a bit on her cheekbones. She had trouble holding some of the positions, even for such short stints as 5 or 10 minutes.
It's amazing how there's people in your life who are just set pieces; extras in your own personal TV show. The people you walk by every day, know nothing about, yet they're as much a fixture in your routine as your wife, or your cat. Yet, one day, if you pass them by, and they've got a haircut - or new glasses - that observation becomes a more memorable exchange than the 30-minute conversation you just had with your Mom.
So... here's to Pat - who last night told me wordlessly that she's getting old, and can't do some of the things she used to do with ease. If it makes you feel any better, my posture is getting exponentially worse and worse.

i think we should get a figure model. use the uss funds.
i so miss figure drawing.
that was kind of depressing though kevin, but true. i know one day i will be 65 and walking down some of the same streets i do now. i often think about how different it will be then. or if i will tell my kids when gas was only 2 bucks a gallon.
thanks for your thoughts.
hmmm... there has to be a word for this rapid oscillating between funny/clever and deep/sad? I'll bet the modern sit-com industry has one.
Mike - I told you... Stay away from my mom! Lousy stepfather...
niff - Tell you what, niffernaut, when you're 65, maybe you'll have one of those motorized carts my uncle has. So when strangers DO notice the change, they'll be impressed!
The Philanthropist - It would probably be called a wus-com. :)
i was just thinking about the "life extra" today, when i passed the guy i pass every morning walking to work and noticed that he got a haircut. how odd. i also experienced deja vu this morning. kevin, i think our years of striving for telepathy are finally showing some results.
Yeah, I too have noticed small changes in the appearance of those minor characters in my life, those people who I pass briefly on my to someplace or from someplace.
My wife, for example has a nice bra. I noticed sometime between our groggy, get out of bed ritual and our groggy, get into bed ritual.
Maybe I'll ask her out on a date.
I think you might be right, Wayne! This morning my brain kept telling to have "Cap'n Crunch", which I odd because I'm a Frosted Mini-wheats kinda guy...
Please try to send me mental notes that encourage my regularity...
Ahaa, very strange... I too have noticed these changings, but I'm (only) 19 years old so these changings are kinda normal. Okeeej... anyways, our model is already old, so if I go back there in about 10 years will she be even more old???
all I have to say is: ewww.
Well - it could be worse; you could go back in 10 years and she's a man -
...and scar tissue is EXTREMELY hard to draw...
That's just sick.
But..
if she ever decides to change her look she will choose to become a rhino. All she needs is a tail.
The first model we had was actually pretty young and good looking too, biut for some reason they switched our model with the model for the girl class....
